Once A Warrior King Review Essay Example For Students

When A Warrior King Review Essay When A Warrior King ReviewOnce a Warrior King gives uncommon and extraordinary understanding into the skirmishes of Vietnam. David Donavan gives his record asthe Army First Lieutenant responsible for a southern Vietnamese district.Based in the southern, country town of Tram Chim, this book moves the focal point of the war from the political misconception and deficiencies to the social impacts they had on both the Vietnamese individuals and Donovan himself. PoliticalThe war in Vietnam is full of mystery. The realities of the war in Vietnam balance forcefully with American impression of it at the time.American aims were as misconstrued as the individuals they were planned to ensure. The data accumulated so as to report the situation during the Vietnam War was a long way from verifiable. Miscommunication was a significant piece of Americas issue in Vietnam.Top authorities and government officials in the U.S. government didnt comprehend what was occurring on the cutting edges and therefor they were not exactly successful in key dynamic procedures. The American individuals additionally saw next to no about the war.Understanding this puts hostile to war dissents in context; the American individuals couldn't imagine the passing and mutilation of kids. American expectations in Vietnam were obfuscated, in this way powers were misinformed and results were unfavorable.Originally the American nearness in South Vietnam was mostly to push for the social advancement of the Vietnamese people.Soon notwithstanding, a hostile position was required even with communist venture into the locale. America expected that socialist control of Vietnam would influence the equalization of politically influential nation in Russias favor. This prompted a lot of analysis of the US for its job as a universal police power. Impacts on VietnameseThe Vietnamese endured on numerous levels because of the United States intervention. The Saigon government, which controlled South Vietnam, was degenerate and outsider to the country people groups. Most of the populace increased almost no regardless of American expectations. Donovan reflects, It appeared to me that debasement was the unmistakable adversary from within. It was a malignant growth consuming the Vietnamese government.Corruption disregarded the people groups trust in reasonable treatment under their laws and made them negative about the real needs of government.(p251)Vietnam has generally been a controlled nation.Following the French pull back from the region, the Vietnamese appeared to be lost and have been seen as a people reliant on the direction of others. However, It wasnt well before the Catch 22 built up that the Vietnamese despised the pushy Americans for continually mentioning to them what to do.(133)These individuals required basic supplies so as to survive. We for the most part gave them weapons, strategy preparing and Christianity.Donavan partook in an apparently uncommon circumstance where constructive, individual cooperation of American and Vietnamese societies can be seen. A passing of a youngster from ringworm is upsetting. To think what only a bar of cleanser would have intended to that youngster on the off chance that he had it in time! What a little basic sanitation, or even a couple of simple medications, could have done to spare the life of that kid or to lessen the hopelessness of thousands of others in my region alone.(p289) The creator comprehended the requirements of the Vietnamese individuals; he got one of them.Americans dont comprehend about soap.(p289)DonovanDavid Donovan was profoundly influenced by his visit in Vietnam. The time he spent in the administration of two nations constrained him to rethink himself and his nation. He recounts sentiments of disarray, disengagement and pain because of his encounters. The creator experienced sentiments of confinement; first, upon his appearance in Vietnam, besides with his arrival to America.Donovan had become some portion of the Vietnamese area under his influence. I had the heartbeat of the spot, its sights and scents, its breezes and rains, its dry spells and floods, its bugs and mammoths, its kin and its beauty.I had been compelled to ingest it all so as to survive.(p308)He didn't permit uneducated perspectives on Vietnam upset him. These convictions alienated him, be that as it may, from quite a bit of standard America. I made harmony with the way that Americans truly didnt know anything about neediness, hardship, or suffering. In short, I could live with the manner in which they ran their lives and the manner in which they pondered issues.(322)I am certain that numerous veterans were actually influenced as Donovan was.He lost numerous parts of himself. This is obvious in his absence of feeling when managing the demise of his dad and the sentime nts of waste when he had free time.Donovan was an optimistic individual of activity who is upset that the war was not effective on any front.

Assisted Suicide

Helped Suicide Free Online Research Papers A large portion of us are naturally introduced to this world without torment and languishing. The injury of our introduction to the world is normally is left distinctly on our mom, and we find out about it consistently on our birthday. As a general rule we grow up and live our lives liberated from physical agony and languishing. Huge numbers of us will have the incidental broken bone or fix medical procedure during our life. These are regularly short recuperations, which permit us to live moderately torment free lives. As we enter the last phase of our lives where biting the dust is the result, the vast majority of us expect not to endure. While we push it on the issue of helped self destruction, we should inquire as to whether being alive is equivalent to living. On the off chance that an individual has stage four malignant growth and is in consistent unendurable torment, specialists do what they can to facilitate their torment with drug. Imagine a scenario where their agony can not be overseen by drug and they need to end their anguish. How would we disregard their desires and let them endure ? We can not let individuals endure Quality of life is a higher priority than amount of life. We end the lives of enduring creatures whether they are pets or game that we eat. We clearly give more an incentive to human life than we do creatures, yet we won’t permit the creatures to endure. It doesn't appear to be legitimate to esteem human life the manner in which we state we do, and not guarantee that passing is esteemed as much as life. How might we let individuals endure when they are passing on? Do we permit individuals to endure since we need to evade individual confliction inside ourselves or do we abstain from being decided by the majority? Would we be able to think about our own lives and the lives of our friends and family and state that we need to endure when we bite the dust. Any individual who can feel torment will say they would prefer not to be in consistent agony and would prefer not to endure when they are biting the dust. Those that need their enduring to stop by taking their lives, ought to be permitted to be aided how they leave this world. The standards of who can be aided their demise, must be clear and compact. There must be exacting measures for help to be given to somebody who is critically ill. There can not be space for specialists or family to rush demise for some other explanation than that of the patient wishes. The use of the help would need to be directed and protects set to guarantee the respectability of the help would not be undermined. Numerous individuals are educated to regard others as we ourselves wish to be dealt with. Regarding this issue we don't treat others along these lines, we permit individual issues of convictions cloud our reasoning. On one hand we can take a gander at helped self destruction as supporting in a homicide. For a great many people murder is unsuitable and wrong so they are against helped self destruction dependent on that conviction. On the off chance that the expectation isn't to slaughter yet to end enduring how might it be equivalent to kill? Completion the enduring of somebody who is in torment, is a characteristic natural reaction that a great many people have inside them. A mother cleans and wraps a cleaned knee of her kid when they tumble off their bicycle. She may likewise offer an icepack or prescription to associate and facilitate the child’s torment. A spouse scouring his wife’s back to help mitigate her torment while she is in the process of giving birth during labor. The specialist that gives torment the executives prescriptions likewise assistants the ladies to facilitate the misery and agony of labor. However we won’t help somebody with end stage pancreatic disease end their misery and unbearable torment. It is ridiculous to consider making into law in which supporting in the demise of our powerless and enduring is acknowledged. As we make the way for help individuals in taking their lives, we open the entryway for individuals to exploit those feeble and enduring individuals. Specialists would be permitted to make careful decisions, giving deadly activity when it is undesirable or unwarranted.† Considering sanctioning to be the initial step on a tricky slant that closes with doctors applying pressure on the older to be euthanized to let loose a clinic bed, or even to specialists executing patients without their consentâ€Å"(Young, 2010. p. B.7 ). This additionally opens up contention of what is worthy and what isn't. Specialists make a solemn vow to do no mischief and to not give anybody drugs that they don't have to treat a sickness, so specialists helping self destruction are really conflicting with this vow. There are sorts of aiding someone’s self destruction. There is inactive help and dynamic help when an individual aides in the self destruction of another. While one is effectively helping somebody in kicking the bucket where medications might be directed to rush demise, detached help is retaining treatment with the end goal for death to happen normally. Is there is a reasonable distinction between evacuating a taking care of or breathing cylinder, and effectively infusing a prescription that halted someone’s heart. It is sensible to state that giving somebody something that takes their life, really associates in slaughtering them. Removing something, implies that there would be not advantage from having it set up. â€Å"If further consideration is probably not going to be of any restorative advantage, a doctor isn't obliged to proceed therapy.†(Clarke Egan, 2009). Many would see this similar to something very similar, as the final product gives you passing. Alongside uninvolved and dynamic helped self destruction, there are a couple of different territories of help that should be taken a gander at. The willful demonstration of having somebody helper you in murdering yourself is comprehending what is at hand.† A patient must comprehend the condition, prognosis, and proposed treatment, and have the option to reason reliably and to follow up based on such thinking. A patient must have the option to impart their decision and the purposes behind that decision and comprehend the pragmatic results of their choice†(Clarke Egan, 2009). Automatic help is one of the most significant parts of this issue, as this help is the point at which a patient can not represent themselves yet for most occurrences, a relative settles on the decision on the result of life and passing for the patient. This issues represents a few concerns. By what means can the emergency clinics and specialists be certain that the individual accountable for settling on this critical choice has the patients wishes or eventual benefits as a main priority. Is this individual the best one to settling on the choice and are their intentions clear and immaculate? â€Å"Jennifer Allwood figured it is tolerant to cover her 67-year-old dad who had malignancy. He had the option to retaliate and survived†.(Clarke Egan, 2009). Settling on a choice that can not be changed and the result risky ought not be permitted to be made lawful. The issue of helped self destruction will probably be bantered for quite a while to come. Seeing what benefits that originate from it appear to be senseless, for a couple of individuals to kick the bucket quicker. With the entirety of the innovation and advances in torment the executives, the real requirement for somebody to need to murder themselves littler than one may might suspect. â€Å"Having thought about the two sides of the issue, our conviction is that, all things considered, it is far superior for the government assistance of society to allow a couple to endure, and not risk making wrongdoing and hoodlums. It appears to us that there is abundant motivation to fear that the act of willful extermination would, over the long haul, cause more damage than anything else. That is the reason the law, working as it generally accomplishes for the great of greater part, has intelligently disallowed it (Appel,2004). Individuals reserve the privilege to choose how they need to bite the dust and there is no requirement for anybody to endure as their life is finishing. Individuals have in the past settled on the decision to help other people end their enduring in times when the individual couldn't assent, however plainly was torment and in agonizing torment. A lady was given a lethal portion of morphine when she was near death so as to forestall further anguish. The case was that of a military colonels spouse in New York State who had endeavored self destruction by expelling all the woolen covers and moderate consuming material off her bed, at that point lying on an overwhelming straw bedding and burning down it. The lady was a loathsome incredible sight and was truly simmered alive; when she lifted her arm to warmly greet Kempster, the tissue dropped from the bone, leaving the lower arm completely exposed. A specific end was just a couple of hours away, every second was torment of the most loathsome kind, and the patient was screaming with misery while trusting that demise will alleviate her from her anguish. The womans individual doctor demonstrated that he proposed to infuse her with just ten drops of morphine; Kempster, brought in to counsel, exhorted him to fill the syringe-and when the individual doctor would not assume liability for such a definitive advance, Kempster grabbed hold of the needle and regulated the deadly portion himself.5 Not just did he accept he had done right-a judgment supposedly affirmed by the cleric who had been brought in to regulate the womans last customs however he communicated his firm expectation, if vital, to end effectively the lives of different patients. Kempster said that he never went on an excursion and he [had] been everywhere throughout the world-without taking with him the methods by which to end the life of an appalling person who may be harmed in a mishap past the expectation of recuperation, and whose sufferings were severe(Appel,2004). How might we walk out on the ones that are enduring when they can not returned from the way to death? We as a whole merit the option to bite the dust with nobility and liberated from torment. Three key focuses that help dynamic helped self destruction are â€Å" the alleviation of obstinate torment, the regard for self-rule and the firmly related dread of lost pride that goes with the loss of autonomy†(Clarke Egan, 2009). 70% of the individuals surveyed in an overview supported to â€Å"allow specialists to agree to the desires of a withering patient in extreme trouble who requests to have their life ended(Jannetti, April, 2010). This percent is exceptionally high thinking about that in many states in the United States ban helped self destruction. The quantity of individuals who need it to be accessible must advocat

Feminist Bookstores and #SmallActs Under Trump

Feminist Bookstores and #SmallActs Under Trump The Womens March may be over, but our work isnt anywhere close to finished. And so its time to think hard about how that energy can find its way into all corners of our lives. We should continue to show up for intersectional social justice, call our elected representatives until the phone lines melt, and protest the hell out of all the cruelty and repression thatll be coming our way. And we can make sure the small choices in our daily lives add up to something big. On Twitter, Celeste Ng, author of Everything I Never Told You, has been encouraging her followers to share those little bits of resistance and solidarity with the hashtag #smallacts. (Shes suggested 20 small acts to get started in Teen Vogue.) As we all pursue our own #smallacts, as we work to imagine what our everyday lives should look like in this absurd and uncertain future, heres one proposal: lets take a page from feminist bookstores. In a lot of ways, I came of age as a feminist at A Room of Ones Own in Madison, Wisconsin. While a student at Beloit College, I would frequently make the trek to Madison primarily to browse (and buyoh did I buy) books at the bookstore. In the courses I took for my Womens Studies major, I had my mind frequently expanded and exploded by the variety and power of feminist voices. And that experience continued at A Room of Ones Own, where I knew that any book I pulled off the shelf would be written from a feminist perspective, even as they were anything from ideologically uniform. (With Andrea Dworkin and Carol Queen sharing shelf space, I was sometimes surprised the place didnt catch fire.) Every book proceeded from a fundamental commitment, at the very least, to womens humanity. Which youd hope was a low bar but really isnt. And A Room of Ones Own isnt, well, on its own in its commitment to stocking and celebrating those books. Theres Women Children First in Chicago. (One of my proudest moments as a writer is still the time a few years ago when I saw a book Id written an essay forThe Fat Studies Readeron display at Women Children First. Squee.) Theres Bluestockings in New York. Theres Antigone Books in Tuscon. And, and, and. Alas, not all of us live driving distance from one of these glorious destinations. But we can all take some lessons from feminist bookstores in the years to come. Here are some ideas: Stock your bookshelves/mind/life with care and purpose. Some people dont share that basic conviction that women are people. Those people dont deserve your space or your time. With so much amazingness out in the world, you really dont need to give yourself to antifeminist bullshit. Instead, try to Shop local and shop political. Women Children First in Chicago cleverly exhorts potential customers to Shop as Independently as You Think. Follow their lead. If you have a feminist bookstore nearby, shop there. If you have a not-explicitly-feminist indie bookstore nearby, shop there and encourage them to stock tons of feminist titles. If you dont have either nearby, consider ordering online from Bluestockings or Antigone. Even if you dont buy all your books at indies (Ill admit that I dont), make your purchasing purposeful. Where you spend your pocket change may be a minor decision, but it can also be a #smallact. Who you spend your money supporting matters, too, so make sure you Read more women of color. And queer women. And Muslim women. Feminist bookstores are devoted to celebrating and highlighting marginalized voices. We here at Book Riot share that commitment, and you can, too. Design the endcaps and tabletop displays of your life with an eye toward boosting voices that those in power may try to silence. Buy more diverse books. Follow more women of color on Twitter. Commit to reading journalism by immigrant women. Pay attention to what indigenous women have to say about upcoming books. Add a queer comic to your night stand so youre more likely to pick it up. Broadening what you read is one step toward making broader, more inclusive connections. Which will allow you to better Find a communityor make one. Feminist bookstores arent just about books. They are crucial community hubs, places where people can come together to pursue feminist ends (and discuss and debate what exactly that means). With art displays and poetry readings, with coffee counters and couches, with meeting spaces and political organizing, feminist bookstores make the places they are better. And we can, too. If you dont have a feminist bookstore near you, then be the feminist bookstore near you.   These are just a few of the many lessons we can learn from places like A Room of Ones Own. But lets start here. Lets take these #smallacts and build something big.

GMAT Action Plan How to Study and Prepare for the Graduate Management Admission Test

GMAT Action Plan: How to Study and Prepare for the Graduate Management Admission Test First, check out myfree GMAT e-book: Master the GMAT by Brian McElroy, and my GMAT Blog on Reddit: r/GMATpreparation Then...1) Go to the MBA.com website and download the free GMATPrep software. This online software contains the only 2 real CATs (computer adaptive tests) that are freely made available to the public. After familiarizing yourself with the software using the Test Preview tool, take the first of the two practice tests. This is your baseline score. If your initial score is low, dont worryyou havent started preparing yet. If for some reason youre not yet comfortable taking the first practice test, then switch steps #2 and #1. Save the other GMAT test and take it as your final practice test shortly before your test date. When writing the "analyze an argument" essay, please be warned that the GMAT Prep software has a bad reputation for swallowing up test-takers' essays--the software is a bit clunky, and for some reason, after you write and submit your essay in the software, the essay will disappear, never to be seen again. Thus, I strongly recommend that you write your essays on an outside word processor where your work can be saved as a backup, or at least make sure to cut-and-paste the text of your essay into a text document when you are done. If you have a little extra money to spend (GMAT prep is not cheap), then you should also strongly consider purchasing the GMATPrep Exam Pack 1 and the GMATPrep Exam Pack 2 for an additional $50 each (or save 10 bucks by buying the Exam Pack Bundle). These contain four more official GMAT practice tests, giving you six real tests to work with instead of just two. While you're at it, you should also strongly consider buying the GMATPrep Question Pack 1 for an additional $30, which will give you plenty of questions you can practice on your computer, instead of just in a book (remember, the GMAT is a computer test and as such you should spend much of your time looking at questions on a screen). You can view all of those products in one place (now being rebranded as "GMAT Official Practice Exams and Questions") here. Yes, these materials from the test maker are on the pricey side. However, Official GMAT tests are invaluable, because although there are some companies out there who write realistic imitations of GMAT questions, they can never quite match the idiosyncratic nature of real GMATs. Moreover, only the GMAC has access to the precise algorithms that determine your actual GMAT score. Tests from other companies are fine for practice, and necessary in many ways, but the only scores you can fully trust are these official tests from the test maker. If you do in fact purchase the Exam Pack 1, then you could take the 6 tests at evenly spaced intervals throughout your preparation, which would provide you with twice as much information about your progress. Avoid the temptation to take all of these tests early in your prep, for the reasons discussed above. Pro tip: You can take each of the 6 GMAT Prep CATs more than once, because the GMAT is an adaptive test (it adjusts the difficulty level of later questions based on your previous responses). There are about 4 to 16 times as many questions in the GMAC's question pool as there are in any given test, which means that every test you take will be different. Tests 1 and 2 draw from a (gigantic!) pool of about 1,500 questions, and tests 3, 4, 5, and 6 draw from a more modest pool of about 400 questions each. To re-take your GMAT Prep tests, click "reset" in the lower-left hand corner of the GMAT Prep software window, but make sure to take screenshots of your previous test sessions beforehand--frequent screenshots are a good idea anyway because the software is prone to crashing and losing your data. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac. Thus, the 6 official CATs can easily turn into 12 or more CATs if nec essary. 2) Purchase one, preferably two copies (the second copy should be left blank) of the 2018 Official Guide to the GMAT or--even better--the GMAT 2018 Official Guide Bundle, which includes the Quantitative and Verbal Review Guides (you can also read my exhaustive customer review of the Bundle, which is currently the first one on top). The Official Guide (OG) will become your new best friend: it contains over 900 practice problems and a diagnostic test, as well as free online access to copies of the questions through the (included) Wiley Online Question Bank. In addition, purchase a (print or digital) copy of Brandon Royal's Ace the GMAT: Master the GMAT in 40 Days, which will serve as your GMAT strategy guide and study plan. You will also find helpful free introductory materials on the web, on sites likeGMAT Club and Economist GMAT. Start working through these books from front to back. If you get stuck on something, then just mark the page and move on. The idea is to get yourself familiarized with the test as much as you can before you start taking a class or working with a private tutor. Dont worry about timing yourself just yet, but you might want to record how long each question takes you. You get around 2 minutes per quantitative question, and 1.5 minutes per verbal question. In addition, you can use this modifiedGMAT Club spreadsheet to help organize your studies by topic, and for helpful links to question explanations. As an alternative to the physical books, feel free to purchase the Kindle versions of the Official Guides--they are quick, convenient and environmentally friendly, and they work on nearly any device with a screen. For some reason, you must buy the books separately (not as a bundle) to access the Kindle versions. You can buy the Quant Guide separately here, and the Verbal Guide separately here. One aspect of these books that you must understand is that they are not meant to teach you GMAT test-taking strategy. For that, look elsewhere, such as Manhattan Prep, or to your classroom teacher / private tutor (scroll to the bottom of my detailed review of the 2017 GMAT Official Guide Bundle on Amazon for a full list of links to my recommended GMAT strategy guides). However, the GMAT Official Guides include some of the very best practice materials available, straight from the test-maker, and although the answer explanations are often convoluted, they are still useful in understanding how the GMAC thinks. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible. 3) Set a score goal. My students' GMAT student improvements are usually around 50-150 points, given time for sufficient preparation and dependent on the students starting score. To state the obvious: the higher your starting score, the fewer points improvement you can expect. IR and Essay improvements are more difficult to predict, but are usually around 1-2 points. Check out this chart that shows you how GMAT Math and Verbal scores combine to produce a composite score.4) Utilize free online resources such as Reddit, GMAT Club , GMAT Quantum Free Math Videos ,GMATPrepNow, and Magoosh. All of these companies also offer paid options for video learning and practice: Quantum (math only) is $89 for 1 month, $169 for 3 months. GMATPrepNow is $58 for 3 weeks and $88 for 6 months. Magoosh is about $150, $100 when there is a promotion. In general, the online forums such as GMAT Club are a great resource for quick question explanations-- a simple google search for the text of your question will usually yield great results in a short amount of time--but sometimes a video explanation can work even better.Be careful when trying to learn by video exclusively, however. It is important to understand that video learning is often not the best type of learning. It's easy to watch a video, of course, but it often doesn't lead to great retention and test-taking awareness. Working on practice questions, reviewing them, putting them aside for 7-10 days to forget the details, then reworking the ones you got wrong until you have fixed your mistakes is much more valuable than passive study.5) If you need lots of remedial help, or if you havent taken a college math class in a long time, then it might make sense to take a GMAT classroom course, such as the ones at UCSD, where I am currently an instructor. But dont overpay for an elite course most of these courses are the same, are taught by relatively inexperienced teachers, and focus on basic content and strategies. Instead, save your mon ey for a qualified private tutor later on in the process.6) If you can afford it, find a GMAT tutor and schedule some lessons. If you are willing to be tutored viaSkype or another online tool, or if want an in-person tutor and you are located in the San Diego area, then you should consider working with me! Before purchasing time me or any other GMAT tutor, I would strongly suggest that you first schedule a phone consultation to discuss strategies and scheduling. Working with a private tutoris the very best way to maximize your score, for a variety of reasons: 1) You are given personalized attention, lessons tailored to fit your schedule, and the opportunity to discuss each question in-depth until you are fully satisfied. 2) Private tutors are usually the best instructors. 3) A skilled private tutor will serve as a friend and confidant, hold you accountable, give you specific assignments and work on any problem areas so that all you have to do is put in the effort. Simply talking about the questions with your tutor helps aid your understanding of each question and your test-taking strategies.7) Study, Study, Study. Practice, Repeat, Forget, Practice, Repeat, Forget, Practice, RepeatRemember. GMAT Study Plan - 2016 Edition8) When youre ready, decide on a test date and register for your GMAT. 9) Take periodic practice CATs in the lead-up to the actual GMAT. I recommend that you take at least 8 CATs total. So if you are preparing for 24 weeks, for example, then you should take a full practice test every 3 weeks. 10) Youre ready. Good luck! Ge t detailed directions to the test center and get there ahead of time. Be prepared and remember that you will get your verbal and quant scores (although not your essay score) immediately after the test. After viewing your scores, you will be given the option to either cancel or report your score (if you choose to report your score but later change your mind, you can also choose to cancel online within 72 hours of your test date). If you choose to report your score at the test center, then you will be given a printout with your "unofficial" score and your score will become official 72 hours later. If it doesn't go well the first time, then remember that most students do better the second time they take the GMAT. Update 7/16/15: if you do choose to cancel your score, then you no longer have to worry about the dreaded "C" showing up on your score report: the GMAT has discontinued this policy. You will also be allowed to retake the test after a 16-day time period, and you can take the GMAT up to five times per year. You can now use the "Score Preview Feature" to see your GMAT scores before deciding whether to report them or cancel them, which means that you can take the GMAT as many times as needed, without worrying about your lower scores being visible to anyone but you. Business schools will now only see the scores you want them to see, which removes the fear of failure and thus takes away some of the pressure. In addition, cancelled scores can be reinstated. For more info: GMAT Score Preview FeatureDont forget that the test itself costs $250. There are fee waivers available for those who qualify. Homework and Practice Tests - Rules, Tips and Suggestions (and the art of Blind Repetition) The best way to prep for the GMAT is simple on its face, yet complex in its execution. On the face, its simple: work through the Official Guides, the Question Packs, the Exam Packs and the Math/Verbal Guides from front to back. Take all 6 Manhattan CATs. Practice whenever you get a chance, and vary between timed and untimed exercises. Try 40 questions at a time--that's the average length of one section on the GMAT. However, the question is exactly *how* to work your way through the books and other materials. The problem is that we often fool ourselves into thinking that weve resolved our issues with a question, because we have read the explanation and now understand why the correct answer is correct. In other words, because I now know that the answer is A, and can put together the reasons why after the fact, I can move on to other questions, in the belief that Ive learned my lesson and will not make that mistake again. Its often a mistaken belief, however. The issue is that *understan ding* the correct answer is not the same as being able to execute the question from scratch and find the correct answer. The same applies to learning vocabulary, for example. Just because youre looking at the definition of a word, and you know its meaning in the moment, doesnt mean that youll be able to access its definition under real test conditions. As the saying goes, everything is obvious once you know the answer. Of course you think you know the meaning to a word in the moment that youre reading the definition. Its only when the answer is taken away, and we are given time to reset our short-term memory, that we can truly determine our level of understanding. Another problem is that once we remember the answer to a question, it loses much of its utility. If I know that the answer is B before I start a question, then I am going to be biased toward that answer, which affects my response and makes it much different from the process of taking a test where the answers are undetermin ed. Thus, we need to do 2 things:1) Blind Repetition. This means that when we repeat a question, we do not look at our previous work, or check the correct answer beforehand. This is much easier with a blank copy of the book at your disposal. 2) Wait until youve forgotten it. Dont repeat questions whose answers you still remember. Complete enough new questions in the meantime so that when you return to a question, you can evaluate it impartially. This is where the second, blank copy of the book will prove its worth. It prevents you from spying on your previous work, or the correct/incorrect answer, and serves as a way of truly telling whether you understand a question. Your tutor will also help keep you honest, of course. - 2:1 ratio: You should spend at least two hours on homework for every one hour you spend with your tutor. Ideally, the ratio is closer to 3:1. That means, for example, that if you buy a 25-hour package with me, that you will be spending at least 75 hours on self-st udy, which of course adds up to 100 hours of preparation. I have found that my students' GMAT scores will continue to improve past 100 hours of prep, but you will likely see diminishing returns after that point. -Vary the length of time that you study and work on practice questions. Sometimes you might study for 2 hours, sometimes for 1 hour, sometimes for 30 minutes and maybe even just for 15. -Make sure to take a full CAT at least once a month to track your progress. Good luck! The GMAT is a very difficult test but it can be conquered, and even mastered, with perseverance and the right guidance. This Side of Paradise F. Scott Fitzgerald Quotes

With This Side of Paradise (his debut novel), F. Scott Fitzgerald took the literary world by storm (the first printing sold out in a matter of days). And, with the success of this work, he was able to win back Zelda (with whom he would have such a tumultuous relationship for so many years to come). The book was first published in 1920. Here are a few quotes. This Side of Paradise Quotes From Book 1 She had once been a Catholic, but discovering that priests were infinitely more attentive when she was in process of losing or regaining faith in Mother Church, she maintained an enchantingly wavering attitude. Book 1, Ch 1 They slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered. Book 1, Ch 1 He wanted to kiss her, kiss her a lot, because then he knew he could leave in the morning and not care. On the contrary, if he didnt kiss her, it would worry him.... It would interfere vaguely with his idea of himself as a conqueror. It wasnt dignified to come off second best, pleading, with a doughty warrior like Isabelle. Book 1, Ch. 3 Dont let yourself feel worthless; often through life you will really be at your worst when you seem to think best of yourself; and dont worry about losing your personality, as you persist in calling it; at fifteen you had the radiance of early morning, at twenty you will begin to have the melancholy brilliance of the moon, and when you are my age you will give out, as I do, the genial golden warmth of 4 P.M. Book 1, Ch. 3 Never walk near the bed; to a ghost, your ankle is your most vulnerable part--once in bed, youre safe; he may lie around under the bed all night, but youre safe as daylight. If you still have doubts pull the blanket over your head. Book 1, Ch. 4 This has nothing to do with will-power; thats a crazy, useless word, anyway; you lack judgment—the judgment to decide at once when you know your imagination will play you false, given half a chance. Book 1, Ch. 4 Life was a damned muddle... a football game with every one off-side and the referee gotten rid of—every one claiming the referee would have been on his side... Book 1, Ch. 5 Quotes From Book 2 All life was transmitted into terms of their love, all experience, all desires, all ambitions, were nullified—their senses of humor crawled into corners to sleep; their former love-affairs seemed faintly laughable and scarcely regretted juvenalia. Book 2, Ch 1 I have your best interests at heart when I tell you not to take a step youll spend your days regretting. Its not as if your father could help you. Things have been hard for him lately and hes an old man. Youd be dependent absolutely on a dreamer, a nice, well-born boy, but a dreamer—merely clever. (She implies that this quality in itself is rather vicious.) Book 2, Ch 1 People try so hard to believe in leaders now, pitifully hard. But we no sooner get a popular reformer or politician or soldier or writer or philosopher—a Roosevelt, a Tolstoi, a Wood, a Shaw, a Nietzsche, than the cross-currents of criticism wash him away. My Lord, no man can stand prominence these days. Its the surest path to obscurity. People get sick of hearing the same name over and over. Book 2, Ch 2 I regretted my lost youth when I only envy the delights of losing it. Youth is like having a big plate of candy. Sentimentalists think they want to be in the pure, simple state they were in before they ate the candy. They dont. They just want the fun of eating it all over again. The matron doesnt want to repeat her girlhood—she wants to repeat her honeymoon. I dont want to repeat my innocence. I want the pleasure of losing it again. Book 2, Ch 5 Progress was a labyrinth ... people plunging blindly in and then rushing wildly back, shouting that they had found it ... the invisible king—the à ©lan vital—the principle of evolution ... writing a book, starting a war, founding a school... Book 2, Ch. 5 He found something that he wanted, had always wanted and always would want—not to be admired, as he had feared; not to be loved, as he had made himself believe; but to be necessary to people, to be indispensable... Book 2, Ch. 5 Life opened up in one of its amazing bursts of radiance and Amory suddenly and permanently rejected an old epigram that had been playing listlessly in his mind: Very few things matter and nothing matters very much. Book 2, Ch. 5 Modern life... changes no longer century by century, but year by year, ten times faster than it ever has before—populations doubling, civilizations unified more closely with other civilizations, economic interdependence, racial questions, and—were dawdling along. My idea is that weve got to go very much faster. Book 2, Ch. 5 Im restless. My whole generation is restless. Im sick of a system where the richest man gets the most beautiful girl if he wants her, where the artist without an income has to sell his talents to a button manufacturer. Even if I had no talents Id not be content to work ten years, condemned either to celibacy or a furtive indulgence, to give some mans son an automobile. Book 2, Ch. 5 As an endless dream it went on; the spirit of the past brooding over a new generation, the chosen youth from the muddled, unchastened world, still fed romantically on the mistakes and half-forgotten dreams of dead statesmen and poets. Here was a new generation, shouting the old cries, learning the old creeds, through a revery of long days and nights; destined finally to go out into that dirty gray turmoil to follow love and pride; a new generation dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken.... Developing HR Outsourcing Consultants - 1675 Words

What is it our company can do for yours? This is the motto of an organization devoted to outsourcing. These days no good company has done without some amount of outsourcing. Outsourcing is a cost saving method that companies employ by utilizing less labor and overhead in house. Drug Testing for School Athletes - 966 Words

Drug use in school athletics has become a substantial problem in today’s society. With the rising pressure to succeed and the high level intensity in athletics, it does not come to a surprise that so many student–athletes are giving in to drugs. Many schools that are faced with drug use are turning to mandatory drug tests for student-athletes; however mandatory drug tests are a violation of the Fourth Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and drug testing reverses the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty. Some people believe th at schools have the right to force students to participate in mandatory drug tests to protect the school as a whole, but in reality the School possesses no right to invade on the individual rights of the students themselves. An example of drug testing violating the Fifth Amendment is a court case involving a Pennsylvania School. The court ruled the schools drug testing policy unconstitutional because it violated the Fifth Amendment (American Civil Liberties Union). The school was ultimately forcing the students to submit to drug tests without compelling evidence. The students were basically providing the evidence of their guilt which is a violation of the constitution. Mandatory Drug testing within schools reverses the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty and also violates the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. Without suspicion of drug use, there is no probable cause to test student-athletes for drugs, thus violating the Fourth Amendment right to be free from unlawful searches. Stranger in America - 1247 Words

16 October 2013 From the Outside Looking In What does it mean to be an â€Å"American†? To each individual person it means something very different. For the writer Bharati Mukherjee, who wrote the essay, â€Å"American Dreamer†, to be a true American someone has to want to be an American, not just prove that they merited citizenship. Her essay â€Å"American Dreamer† goes in depth into this idea and her opinion that as an American one should believe in bringing together the cultures in America. â€Å"We must think of American culture and nationhood as a constantly reforming, transmogrifying â€Å"we† (Mukherjee 438). For the author James Baldwin, who wrote the essay â€Å"Stranger in the Village†, an American is a person who is integrated with other cultures, and†¦show more content†¦Baldwin says, â€Å"The time has come to realize that the interracial drama acted out on the American continent has not only created a new black man, it has created a new wh ite man, too. (Baldwin 449) Baldwin believed that the time has come for Americans to open their eyes to the world around them and learn to embrace the new cultures constantly growing to be apart of what makes up America. As an African-American in the 50s Baldwin especially felt how important it was for there to be and end to the separation of cultures and race in America. Another main likeness between â€Å"American Dreamer† and â€Å"Stranger in the Village† is the author’s thoughts and beliefs for the future of America. Even though the time frame of the two essays is very different both of the authors agree that Americans need to embrace foreigners and grow with the new cultures, which is an ideal that is still relevant today. Mukherjee believes that for the future Americans need to be actively involved in fighting discrimination. Americans need to move away from the cultural ideas of the forced assimilation of the â€Å"melting pot† and the multicultur al â€Å"mosaic†. She believes that Americans must stray from the â€Å"us versus them† mentality; we need to think of America as a â€Å"we† in order to grow and prosper as a country. Nursing Practice Free Essays

My nursing practice has been characterized by a marked transition from the general wards to the intensive care unit. Nevertheless, my values have remained intact. Initially, I must admit, I believed that patients had no role in determining the medication or intervention they receive. We will write a custom essay sample on Nursing Practice or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, since I came to know about it, in a nursing class, the value of decision-making independence has guided my practice. I learnt the value in class, thus, my definition of the term is influenced by Fahrenwald et al., who defined decision-making autonomy as the act of allowing patients to make their own decisions regarding diagnosis and treatments, albeit after receiving all relevant information (2005). The value of decision-making autonomy and working with patients under intensive care have shaped my understanding of person-centered care and its relevance to nursing, as a profession and a practice. In the ICU, it is easy to view the person as just a patient. However, I have deliberately chosen to consider them people who are just momentarily inconvenienced by illness. As a nurse, I am in agreement with Ross, Tod, Clarke’s (2015) observation that the definition and use of person-centered care has been fluid and varies in distinct research, guidance, policy and daily practice. Still, I concur with the definition offered by the American Geriatrics Society; eliciting individuals’ preferences and values and, once expressed, letting them guide all healthcare aspects, and supporting their practical life and health goals (2015). However, I find an earlier definition by McCormack, Dewing, Breslin (2010) quite relevant to practice. They define person-centered care as an approach to nursing practice that is created by forming and fostering therapeutic relationships between patients, care providers and other people who are significant to the patients’ lives. Drawing from the two definitions, I believe person-centered care is viewing patients as persons with social networks and accomodating their beliefs and values in the provision of care, while developing relationships that enable the attainment of healthcare as well as life goals. In adherence to the value of decision-making autonomy, I always communicate to patients their diagnosis and suggested interventions. To attain the goals associated with the value, one needs excellent communication and people skills, which is one of my strengths in practice. More specifically, I have demonstrated empathy, which is a person-centered communication skill. In the course of my practice, I try to comprehend and share into the perspectives, current situation and feelings of the persons under my care. That creates a bond of trust, social support and mutual understanding. The informed patients then get to decide whether they agree with the diagnosis, and whether they are willing to receive the suggested interventions. In case of the ICU, I consult with the patients’ families and let them make the decisions. Human dignity is another value that has influenced most of my decisions in my professional and personal life. As a nurse, I believe it is important to respect all individuals, including the patients, their families and the entire society. In line with the value of human dignity, I respect patients’ belief systems and consider their natural human values during my interactions with them and their families. However, at times, it is difficult to know some patients’ beliefs, especially in the ICU. Although it is possible to get information about patient beliefs from their families and close friends, I consider it my duty to ensure that the informants do not pass out their own belief systems as the patients’. Trustworthiness and honesty are important strengths that have enabled me uphold human dignity in my practice. Without being trustworthy, patients and their families would not reveal their secrets to me. Many a times, the secrets are critical to the formulation of interventions. Human dignity also dictates that I protect patients’ confidentiality during clinical interactions. For instance, I always ensure that I cover all exposed body parts of patients. What’s more, I demonstrate my respect for human dignity through respectful communication with patients’ families and keeping their secrets confidential. Respecting human dignity calls for mindfulness, which is another person-centred communication skill I believe I possess. Hafskjold et al., (2015) define mindfulness as the art of drawing unique variations by being present in interactions. By being mindful, I am able to observe the happenings and act according to what I notice. Research shows that mindfulness by nurses leads to more satisfied patients (Ross, Tod, Clarke, 2015). My practice has also been guided by altruism. My own conceptualization of altruism is in line with the definition of the term offered by Shahriari et al., (2013); focusing on patients as human beings, while striving to promote their health and welfare. In nursing practice, the ICU is ostensibly the most tasking department to work in. It requires working without losing concentration, whether one is on a day shift or night shift. I have often found myself standing next to patients’ beds throughout the night just to make sure they are fine. Despite the tough requirements, I believe I have exhibited devotion and selflessness the entire time I have attended to patients in the ICU, and even before. Undeniably, sometimes I have felt exhausted by the demands of the job, but my altruistic tendencies have always reminded me that nursing is not just a job, but a calling that requires me to give my all towards the healthcare and welfare of others. To reflect on my professional practice, I use two different strategies; the Gibbs model and John’s reflective framework. The Gibbs (1988) Model has six stages; description of event, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action. On its part, John’s framework has three important elements; bringing the mind home, experience description and reflection (Palmer, Burns, ; Bulman, 1994).Part 2 Wanda formulated a reflection model that requires students to follow a five-step process during reflective practice, also known as the 5Ds structured reflection model (2016). The 5Ds stand for Doubts/differences, Disclosure, Dissection, Discover and Decision. The learner reflects on whether s/he has any doubts in his/her practice, or whether there are any differences between what s/he did in a clinical setting and what is found in literature. Disclosure entails writing about the experiences or situation on the topic discussed in the doubts section, while the dissection section considers why it happened and the impact. Discover involves finding additional information from relevant literature and the decision part describes a future plan.5Ds model of structured reflection (Wanda, 2016) The Rolfe model enables students to reflect on their experiences based on three questions; what, so what and now what (Rolfe, Freshwater, ; Jasper, 2001). The first question allows students and nurses to describe the situation, while the second question gives students room to discuss what they learnt, while the answers to the last question identify what the person should do to develop learning and improve future outcomes. The 5Ds Structured reflection The two models have various similarities and differences. For starters, the two reflective models allow students to explore their experiences while being guided by something. However, in the Rolfe model, students are guided by the questions, while in Wanda model (2016); students are guided by the 5Ds expressed earlier. A key strength of the 5Ds reflection model is that it focuses on the student as an individual (Wanda, 2016). Consequently, it enables students to decide what they need to learn more about, which makes them more self-directed in their learning. Secondly, it has a positive impact on students’ ability to self-evaluate during clinical practice (Wanda, 2016). When used by students, it improves their ability to assess their own performance in clinical practice.Despite the apparent strengths, the model also has some limitations. To begin with, the effectiveness of the model can be restricted by students’ characteristics (Wanda, 2016). For instance, the less motivated students are not suited to the reflective model. As a result, the model is not an effective learning tool for all students. What’s more, the use of the 5D model requires consistent supervision, which is sometimes not possible because faculty members might have workloads that limit their time (Sicora, 2017).Grant, McKimm, Murphy (2017) posit that the analysis part of the Rolfe et al. framework considers not just the technical-rational knowledge but also other forms of knowledge that might inform the comprehension of a particular situation. This is one of the strengths of the reflective model since it allows learners explore all knowledge points. However, it runs the risk of leading to superficial reflections (Sicora, 2017). At times, the students might just result to answering the three questions in short answers. That would not help in yielding a comprehensive reflection that would help them learning about their achievements and shortcomings that can help improve their practice. At a personal level, I prefer the 5Ds model. My preference for the model is informed by my desire to identify my doubts in practice as well as the tasks I perform in a way that is different from dictates of literature. That would help me refine my skills and procedures in practice, while making me a more confident practitioner, particularly in the ICU. Evaluation in Tourism and Hospitality - MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Evaluation in Tourism and Hospitality Managerment. Answer: Introduction: J.W. Mariott Jr. owns the Mariott group of hotels and the head office of the company is located in Bethesda. The company is well known for the services that it provides to the consumers with the lodging purposes. It is very comfortable in nature and provides excellent services to the guests at all their locations at a global level (Akincilar Dagdeviren, 2014). The website of the company is very detailed and contains all the information that is required for a person to apply for a job. The workplace makes the employees feel that they are in a homely environment and it brings the best of the employees on a regular basis. This is done by giving them proper training so that they can increase their level of productivity. The searching and applying for the jobs on the websites of this company is very simple where the person can explore the opportunities that they provide so that it helps in inspiring them (Jeong, Oh Gregoire, 2015). The process of application for the company is that the applicant needs to have a valid mail id or they can create one from the different email providers such as gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc. On successfully entering the website of career, the applicant has to click on the search and apply jobs, which will help them in identifying the job openings that are present in the company on a current basis. If the applicant is applying for the first time then they need to create an account in the company, which will help him in getting a unique username and password, which will enable him to access the site in the future. The process has many steps and it will take around 30-45 minutes for an applicant to fill up the process. If the process cannot be completed within the stipulated time, the applicant can save it as draft and submit it on a later period as well (Gazzoli et al., 2013). The Hilton group of hotels started in the year 1919 and has more than 500 hotels and resorts, which is spread across 140 new locations. This group of hotels offers the tourists and travelers with authentic experiences and they are considered to be innovative and leaders in world class products. The services and the amenities that they provide to their guests and the way the hotel group takes care of them are excellent, which provides the travelers to experience the best services that are available around the world. This has led the team to be leaders in their thinking capacity and people who serve the organization are valued and respected all over the world (Jeong, Oh Gregoire, 2015). The company believes that the hospitality sector is not a kind of job but a journey through which the employees can discover themselves. The employees in the company work together as a team, which helps them in delivering better experiences to the customers who visits their hotels. The application process in the hotel is simple as the applicant has to apply for the jobs that are shown under their jobs tab. The applicant needs to upload their resume in the portal of the company for whichever job the applicant is applying. This helps in saving the time of the application process as the applicant can fill up the form at a faster rate because of the hassle-free process. The applicant just needs to opt for the tabs for the jobs that he will be applying and click on it (Murphy et al., 2014). Functionality The potential employees or the applicants can apply for the vacant positions and has been listed in the website of the company. This helps the companies to advertise their needs on the social media sites and the official websites of these companies. the social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn plays a huge role in attracting potential employees as the people keep themselves regularly updated with the information that is being available on the internet especially the social networking sites. The potential employees can apply for the positions that are vacant through the online processes, as it will help in saving the time and money of the company (Gazzoli et al., 2013). The potential employees can register themselves for multiple positions, as there is an option for doing so in the websites of the company. The Marriott hotel allows the employees to register themselves for multiple positions only if they are currently a part of the organization and there is a scope of internal promotion of the employees. The Hilton group of hotels on the other hand allows the applicants to register themselves under multiple positions if they have the required qualifications for all those positions. However, the applicant if selected by the company will be given a particular position, which the management may deem to see fit. The management is not liable to take the opinion of the applicant before offering him the job position in the company (Holcomb, Upchurch Okumus, 2017). The sites present an overall detail of the different positions that are vacant in the company and the career opportunities that the employees will have by inducting themselves in the company. The use of the social media sites has given the companies a farther reach, which has helped them in getting attention from a large number of people. Another major factor is the rise in the employees in the hospitality management industry. People nowadays want to be a part of this sector as it gives the employees to be in the limelight for the time they are working in the sector (Morrison, Taylor Douglas, 2015). The websites of the companies make the applicants aware of the positions that are vacant along with the designation and the place for which the hiring is taking place. This allows the applicant to choose from the different locations that are being advertized by the company. the applicant can be free to relocate themselves or choose to stay in their parent company by applying the jobs that they deem to see fit. The ranges of the positions that are offered by the companies depend on the nature of the vacancies that is present in the company (Caroll Siguaw, 2013). The website of the Marriott hotel chain is attractive as it provides all types of information about the history of the company along with the different positions that are available as vacancies within the organization is also given. The website also has a separate space for the questions that may arise in the minds of the applicants. The questions are based on the common problems that the applicants may face and they can refer to these questions and solve their queries. The webpage also includes the different accolades that the company has achieved from the various organizations due to the service that they have rendered in the hospitality sector (Gehrels, Wienen Mendes, 2016). The Hilton hotel on the other hand has a website that is quite complicated with respect to the jobs page. The profiles of the jobs are all mentioned along with the locations where it is vacant. The social media pages for both the companies are heavily decorated with the various events that they have undertaken recently as it is the only way through which the people can be made aware by the company. This has led to the increase in the use of these sites as it helps the companies to create a greater customer base for them (Xiang Law, 2013). Recommendations The organizations need to create their own networks on the social network sites that will help in generating content and discussion such as LinkedIn. These industries are in constant struggle in recruiting the best people who are talented according to their human resource management team. The current employees of these organizations needs to look after the social media sites so that they can share their achievements and information of the company that is not confidential, which will help in attracting new talents towards the organization (Miranda, Rubio Chamorro, 2014). The managers of the organization need to screen the applicants before selecting them to join the company. While screening the applicants, they need to keep in mind the type of job profile that they are looking for, which will help them in achieving the targets within the limited resources. This will help the company to maximize its profit ratio. The companies need to lay more emphasis on LinkedIn rather than on Facebook as Facebook helps in sharing information whereas the latter helps in connecting the companies with various professionals so that the skills can be marketed along with the information of the job and the development of their careers (Xie Chen, 2014).
